Deserved Quilt of Valour for Hugh Hendry
Military service recognised
“HE’S a special man,” Korumburra RSL President David Jackson said of Hugh Hendry, having nominated the WWII veteran and admired local for a special honour from Quilts of Valour, the organisation presenting Hugh’s stunning quilt on Tuesday.
Cheryl Billing Smith of Quilts of Valour was pleased to bestow the honour, with the proudly crafted quilts generally awarded to military veterans or immediate family members of veterans who have passed away in recognition of their service and sacrifice for their country.
“It will be treasured and loved,” Hugh said, describing the quilt as a “high honour”, an aeroplane featured in the design prompting memories of his time in the Air Force, while poppies brought to mind the sacrifices of his father in the Great War and the lasting impact he endured.
Many members of Quilts of Valour combined to make Hugh’s quilt, Ilse Bartlett credited, Ms Billing Smith detailing its features while it was displayed for an audience at Korumburra RSL to support Hugh.
“The top of the quilt has got many colours, shapes and fabrics, the wadding is the centre of the quilt and it represents your friends, your family and community,” she told Hugh.
She also spoke of other elements of the quilt representing Hugh’s strength and the support of community and family and the nation.
“We sincerely thank you Hugh,” Ms Billing Smith said.
The recipient had the quilt wrapped around his shoulders, expressing his gratitude to Quilts of Valour and to Korumburra RSL for its nomination.
Mr Jackson said that nomination was prompted both by Hugh’s war service and his contribution to the community and his local RSL.
“He’s always been an oracle in the RSL, offering advice, and he’s a stalwart of information,” he said.
Hugh and the community look forward to his hundredth Birthday on Boxing Day.
