THE debate over fossil fuel sponsorship in Australian sport has intensified with Gippsland’s Woodside Wildcats (Woodside and District Football Netball Club) accepting sponsorship from Gippsland Basin Joint Venture partner Woodside Energy.

Highlighting the sharp contrast between elite national codes and grassroots regional communities Woodside Energy has found itself simultaneously facing climate protests over major league alliances in the west while receiving a warm welcome for its small-town community investments in South Gippsland.

The corporate giant’s major partnership with Fremantle Dockers has become a significant flashpoint with climate advocates launching an online petition calling for the Dockers to cut its ties with the oil and gas giant.

Climate change activists argued that aligning the Dockers with a major fossil fuel producer contradicted Fremantle's core organisational pillars of health, wellbeing, and education.

The Dockers have been urged to demonstrate environmental leadership by choosing partners that better reflect modern sustainable expectations. However, there is no such sign of a similar pushback from local football fans.

Local sports clubs such as the Woodside and District Football Netball Club have readily acknowledged that energy companies inject vital funding back into the community keeping both professional sports and children's sport accessible.

Returning to its corporate birthplace in Bass Strait Woodside Energy has already illustrated its grassroots support for local sport. Now operating as a 50 per cent partner in the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture Woodside celebrated its homecoming by sponsoring a community luncheon for local volunteers and families.

The giant corporation has also contributed to a brand-new playing surface for the Wildcats, securing the future for the next generation of young Woodside athletes.

Woodside Energy Vice President East Australia Simon Younger said the support reflected the company's long-standing connection to the region and its commitment to creating lasting value for communities in Gippsland.

"Woodside's story began more than 70 years ago in the Gippsland town of Woodside, and we're proud to be strengthening our connection with the community as we begin a new chapter as operator of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture assets," Mr Younger said.

"Local sporting clubs play an important role in regional communities. They bring people together, support participation across all ages and create lasting connections for families, volunteers and local businesses.

"We're pleased to support the Woodside Football Netball Club and contribute to improvements that will benefit the club and the broader community for years to come."

Woodside Energy claims by building shared value with local communities, government and industry, and through our pioneering employee volunteering and participation programs, it is helping to build stronger communities.

Woodside has emphasised that its social contribution does not stand alone. It complements the company’s broader economic contribution through employment, local procurement, taxation and royalties, and supports stable, resilient communities.

Woodside has recognised that each community is different and appreciates a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always work. According to the global energy giant the company’s global social investment strategy is grounded on a commitment to places they call home and the people who live there.
