Bright news for Parrots as grant greenlights $300k lights boost

1 min read

THE Parrots will be even more thrilled heading into the weekend, with Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence today announcing that nine recipients will share in more than $1.5 million from the 2025-26 Country Football and Netball Program – as well as announcing a new round of grants opening.

Developed in partnership with the AFL, AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria the program will invest $250,000 into new LED Sports Lighting at Leongatha Recreation Reserve. The figure will be supported by $50,000 from the South Gippsland Shire Council.

The announcement has come a lot sooner than expected, according to South Gippsland Mayor John Schelling.

“Very excited, came a lot quicker than expected,” Mayor Schelling said to the Sentinel-Times this afternoon.

“We are very appreciative to Tom McIntosh and the Labor party for supporting us so well.

“It adds to Nyora Recreation Reserves recent funding announcement, six weeks ago.

“(The announcement) allows Leongatha to compete with its peers in the Valley for facilities and a good kick along for them going into the grand final this weekend!”

Other successful grants include $220,000 at Agnes Brereton Reserve in Traralgon to install 200 lux LED lighting on the 10 netball courts, and funding for Woodside Recreation Reserve for lighting upgrades.

“Finals time highlights just how important local grounds are to local communities and these grants will ensure clubs have the facilities they deserve close to home,” Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said.

“Better home ground facilities mean clubs can encourage more participation, host more events, support volunteers, and draw bigger crowds which can be a major boost for regional economies and the jobs and businesses in those regions.”

Applications for the new round of grants for the 2026-27 Country Football Netball Program close on February 26, 2026. Regional and outer metropolitan councils can apply for grants of up to $250,000 for sports infrastructure developments including court lighting upgrades, changeroom overhauls, new pavilions and more.
