Panthers make it four from four

KILCUNDA-BASS welcomed Dalyston down the road and looked to claim their fourth straight win in windy conditions on Saturday.

The Magpies started well working the ball forward through the hands of young gun Hayden Wallis who found his skipper Blake Carew for the first of the afternoon inside two minutes.

But it was the Panthers replying with a great passage of ball movement through the middle, ending in a Dale Gawley major.

A strong cross wind didn’t deter either team’s skills, but scores dried up as both defences held firm, Marcus Baxter’s first the only other major of the term, the hosts leading by five at the first change.

As he has been throughout their winning streak, Taylor Gibson was a force up forward for Killy-Bass, setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities, Anthony Daraio benefitting with a goal.

Daly debutant Troy Alford showed he’s comfortable at the level, swinging the ball over his shoulder to his captain for his second of the afternoon to hit back for the Pies’.

The visitors began to string a couple of excellent minutes of football together and Mason Storr nailed their second in row.

However, it was Yillber Zijai booting the next two, to extend the hosts lead once more, before Baxter slotted his second and Gibson got himself on the board with a booming set shot.

Kilcunda-Bass finishing a brilliant quarter the right way, taking a 29-point lead into the main break.

Daly’ came out hard in the third, lifting their tackling pressure and drying up scoring for the Panthers potent forward line.

This allowed them to press forward as Alford threw his body on the line in defence, winning a free kick and 50-metre penalty which allowed him to find Wallis.

From 50 metres out on the boundary, Wallis nailed the set shot, rewarding the debutant and his team for their hard work.

Although tables turned when Daniel Mock received a 50-metre penalty of his own, making no mistake slotting his first of the match.

The teams then went goal for goal to end scoring in the third term, as Carew booted his third followed by an Ethan Watts reply for the hosts, before the Dalyston captain found his fourth.

The visiting captain was doing all he could to inspire his team with his play, however the Magpies found themselves 25-points adrift at the final break.

Despite Dalyston’s best efforts, it was all Killy-Bass to start the final quarter, as the Panthers full-forward proved tough to stop, Gibson banging through another long set shot to extend the lead.

Although Gibson wasn’t the only man worrying the Magpies back six, as Baxter showed his class, kicking a beauty from the pocket, his third of the day.

Baxter’s fourth came moments later, and Mock finished the job with his second, as the Panthers made it four wins on the trot to the tune of 52-points.

Despite only managing three behinds in the final term, and sporting an inexperienced side, Daly’ never threw in the towel, giving effort right up until the final siren.
