Important Wilsons Prom walk reopened for the holidays

VISITORS can once again walk from Tidal River to Sealers Cove after the reopening of the Sealers Cove Boardwalk at Wilsons Promontory National Park last Friday, September 18.

The 1.8-kilometre boardwalk restores access to one of Victoria’s most popular hiking destinations, just in time for the spring school holidays.

The boardwalk was badly damaged in multiple storms in 2021, leaving it unsafe for walkers.

Replacing almost two kilometres of boardwalk through this sensitive terrain was a complex project. It required crews to be onsite seven days a week working in sometimes wet, unstable conditions with no vehicle access.

Wilsons Prom area chief ranger Brett Mitchell said the rebuild was an opportunity to repair the infrastructure for future generations.

"We've got two kilometres of boardwalk we needed to rebuild that's basically in a swamp," Mr Mitchell said.

The boardwalk is an important link between Tidal River and Sealers Cove. Without it, visitors must complete a 26-kilometre one-way hike to reach the iconic beach.

It also helps protect the park’s fragile wetlands by keeping visitors above sensitive swamp habitat.

The reopening of the boardwalk means more people can once again enjoy Sealers Cove via the 10-kilometre hike from Telegraph Saddle.

Built to last

The new boardwalk has been designed for the Prom's tough conditions, including seasonal flooding and a wet coastal environment.

Modern materials and construction methods have been used to improve durability and help the structure withstand future weather impacts.

Many visitors have followed the rebuild closely. Demand for Sealers Cove campground bookings is expected to be high following the reopening.

Sealers Cove is a bookable campground. Visitors must make a reservation on the Parks Victoria website before arriving.

Visitors who can travel outside peak holiday periods may enjoy a quieter experience while helping reduce pressure on facilities and sensitive natural environments.

The Sealers Cove Boardwalk rebuild is one of several projects improving visitor access and protecting the environment at Wilsons Promontory National Park.

The project forms part of broader investment in the park, including conservation programs and upgrades to visitor facilities, accommodation and walking tracks being delivered through the Wilsons Promontory Revitalisation Project.
