BLUE Bombers and Flash have charged clear at the top of Wonthaggi Table Tennis’s Monday and Tuesday competitions after round four of 10.

Monday competition

Jumbo beat Double Fish 4-1 after Double Fish entered the arena quietly confident of notching a critical win, feeling very barracuda.

Then reality circled, with Jumbo’s lead player Justin gorging on Double Fish like a piranha wolfing down raw prawns, with such bloody voracity it would have had David Attenborough cringing at the carnage.

With ever-improving stablemate Mick, they turned Blue Planet red.

Blue Bombers kept rolling with a 4-1 win over M and M’s.

When M and M’s Michael and Nick took a 2-1 lead in the doubles there was swagger in their strut and signs of an upset, but the top dogs decided not today.

Leading player Tim, sartorially hipster but technically gangster, found his violin case alongside very able teammate Fred, and their comeback to win the doubles was stunning.

The reverse singles was a statement to the rest of the competition: catch us if you can.

Cookie Crumbles beat Lover Boy 5-0 after Lover Boy’s Saxon retired hurt with concerning ankle pain, causing teammate Charley heart pain and gifting Cookie Crumbles the points.

Get well soon to the Lover Boys.

Blue Bombers lead the Monday ladder on 16 points, ahead of M and M’s, Cookie Crumbles and Jumbo on eight, with Double Fish and Lover Boy on four.

Tim is the leading player on eight, ahead of Justin on six.

Tuesday competition

Flash beat Thor 3-2 to lead the charge, with young Corin continuing his dominance and Phil continuing to display all phases of the moon, including eclipses, waxes and wanes.

Batman beat Spiderman 3-2 in the other match.

Flash tops the Tuesday ladder on 16 points, ahead of Thor and Spiderman on eight, with Batman and Hulk yet to score.

Corin is the leading player on six, ahead of Shane on five.

Social play continues on Wednesdays and Saturdays at noon, and junior coaching runs on Thursdays at 6pm.

Leongatha Table Tennis Association

THE top teams in the Leongatha Table Tennis Association spring pennant are staying a few steps ahead of the field, with Yosemite Sam leading A Grade and Margarita on top of A Reserve.

A Grade

Yosemite Sam sits on 14 points, two ahead of Bugs Bunny, while Elmer Fudd has knocked Tasmanian Devil out of third place by a single rubber with both teams on eight points.

Yosemite Sam’s Allan R still holds the top player spot on 23 rubbers, one ahead of Tweety’s Sven on 22.

Bugs Bunny’s Ben and Tasmanian Devil’s Trentares follow on 18, with Daffy Duck’s Case on 17.

The closest game of the round was a five-set match between Muttley’s Dirk and Road Runner’s Dom.

In his first week on the table Dirk took the first set 11-9, before Dom, who had put up a tough fight with a strong defence, hit back to win the second 11-6.

The third set went well past 11 points, with Dirk finally pulling two points clear to win it 16-14.

Dom took the fourth 14-12 but had nothing left in the decider, which Dirk won 11-5.

Muttley went on to win the tie six rubbers to five.

A Reserve

Margarita leads A Reserve on 12 points, with Hawaiian on eight and Super Special on six.

Margarita’s Kale remains well clear as the leading player on 11 rubbers, ahead of Supreme’s Matt on nine, Margarita’s Fred on eight, and Hawaiian’s Vince and Super Special’s Joe on seven.

The best A Reserve game was the doubles between Margarita and Supreme, which went the full five sets.

Margarita won a hard-fought first set 11-8 before Supreme hit back 11-3 in the second.

A service swap helped Margarita regroup and take the third 11-2, but Supreme fought back to win the fourth 12-10.

Margarita’s Kale and Jed then took the deciding set 11-8.

Hawaiian had the bye.

Beyond pennant

The association also runs Ladies Days, Keenagers sessions and training.

Ladies Day continues from 10.30am with bats, coffee and tea available, while Keenagers runs from 9am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and both are stress-free sessions open to new players.
