Sports finals just the tonic we need

2 min read

IT FEELS like we’ve been pummeled by bad news locally, nationally and internationally in recent weeks and months.

And that the bad deeds of some seem to empower others to do likewise.

Korumburra’s Pastor Ian Wilkinson said it best in his Victim Impact Statement ahead of Erin Patterson’s sentencing recently:

“It’s one of the distressing short comings of our society that so much attention is showered on those who do evil and so little on those who do good.”

Well, let’s see what we can do about that, at least for one week.

What a fantastic thing it was, at the weekend, to see so many people in the community out celebrating the culmination of our winter sporting season at venues right across Gippsland.

Huge crowds turned out, especially for some of the local league grand finals, with massive numbers responding at Trafalgar for the Ellinbank grand finals, where Lang Lang triumphed in the Reserves, at Yinnar for the Mid Gippsland finale, with Foster defying the odds and winning a thriller, and Woodside repeating last year’s heroics in the North Gippsland League over TTU at Gaskin Park in Churchill.

Dalyston did a great job of hosting the preliminary finals in the West Gippsland competition and now all eyes turn to Garfield this Saturday, where Inverloch Kongwak and Phillip Island will face off in the Under 18s and Korumburra-Bena meet Nar Nar Goon in the A Grade netball grand final.

It will also be a big day for the Leongatha Parrots and Wonthaggi Power in the Gippsland League at Morwell this Saturday, September 20, with Leongatha represented in the Seniors, Reserves and

Under 18 football grand final and a liberal sprinkling of Parrots and Power teams in the netball grades.

And the Gippsland Soccer League has its grand finale this Sunday in Wonthaggi with nine competitions to be decided and local clubs in each match.

So, is too much sport never enough?

The great thing about sport is its community-building role and we saw that played out right across the board, with people of all ages involved.

It’s also worth noting that National Police Remembrance Day and Victoria’s Blue Ribbon Day are observed on Monday, September 29 so look out for an opportunity to support and celebrate the work of our local police.
