Man winched to safety after 30-metre fall into San Remo crevice
A 50-year-old man was trapped for more than three hours after falling into a crevice off the George Bass Coastal Walk on Saturday afternoon.
A MAN who fell about 30 metres into a rock crevice off the George Bass Coastal Walk at San Remo has been winched to safety after a rescue that took more than three hours on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency services were called about 2.10pm to reports the 50-year-old man had fallen and become trapped in the crevice.
General duties police reached the scene and could speak to the man, but the terrain and a rising tide left them unable to get to him.
Officers from the Search and Rescue Squad were winched down to assess him. He told them he had broken his leg.
The Rescue Coordination Centre ran the response, which drew in Fire Rescue Victoria, the Country Fire Authority, the State Emergency Service, the Air Wing, the Search and Rescue Squad, Ambulance Victoria's helicopter emergency medical service, Life Saving Victoria and the Water Police.
Ambulance Victoria winched the man out about 5.30pm and airlifted him to hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.
