Six fourth-year Monash University medical students got a taste of the rural life working alongside GPs throughout South Gippsland

SIX fourth-year Monash University medical students recently experienced life as a rural GP, having spent a semester working alongside local GPs in Leongatha, Korumburra and Wonthaggi.

For student Yash Patwardhan, who completed his placement at Korumburra Medical Centre, the opportunity to parallel-consult was a highlight.

Parallel or wave consulting has students seeing patients on their own for the first part of the consultation and are then joined by the supervising GP for the conclusion.

“Whilst I was initially filled with doubt around the prospect of doing this, through the patience and mentorship of my supervising doctors, eventually these became my most treasured parts of the day,” explained Yash.

“My time at KMC (Korumburra Medical Centre) has been truly phenomenal. I’ve loved working alongside all the staff, interacting with patients and contributing towards their care.”

The students are placed at Korumburra Medical Centre, Leongatha Healthcare, Wonthaggi Medical Group, South Gippsland Family Medicine and Foster Medical Centre.

Academic coordinator Jennie Casey said support from these practices is vital in training the next generation of doctors in the region.

“The support our students receive from both the GP clinics and the local hospitals is second to none, and their commitment and enthusiasm plays a major role in encouraging students to consider working in a rural area after graduation.”

For Yash, his time in South Gippsland has left a lasting impression.

“The kindness, hospitality and compassion the region has shown towards me has left a lasting impression, full of memories I will cherish for a lifetime., I’ve made a commitment of sorts with myself, to certainly revisit and ‘give-back’ to the South Gippsland community through my future work, in whatever specialty that may be. I can’t wait!”

Another seven Monash medical students will begin their general practice placements in the region in mid June.
