Bass Coast Shire Council is rolling out a $166,025 school holiday infrastructure project to install new speed humps near local schools in Cowes and San Remo.

LOCAL school zones in Cowes and San Remo have been earmarked for a major safety overhaul as Bass Coast Shire prepares to roll out a series of new speed-humps.

Watts profile speed humps will be installed across key school corridors in Cowes and San Remo, aiming to drastically lower driver speeds and safeguard young pedestrians.

The project has been locked in at a total cost of $166,025 with the targeted infrastructure blitz specifically designed to address high-use pedestrian areas directly adjacent to local educational institutions.

The traffic safety package encompasses three major road upgrades across the region.

Settlement Road in Cowes will see the construction of two Watts profile speed humps alongside a brand-new concrete pedestrian access ramp to better protect students at Cowes Primary School.

The Cowes-Rhyll Road will get two Watts profile speed humps near St Mary’s Primary School and Potters Hill Road in San Remo will get two Watts profile speed humps near the Bass Coast College San Remo campus.

Council planners have strategically scheduled the major construction works to take place entirely during the upcoming school holidays. Executing the civil works during the term break is intended to minimise disruption to parents, students and commuters.

The comprehensive construction phase will follow a strict, structured timeline to ensure efficiency. Crews will begin with site mobilisation, establishment, and the setup of strict traffic controls.

This will be followed by the excavation and disposal of existing pavement materials, drainage modifications, and the structural installation of the concrete access ramp.

Once the Watts profile speed humps and their corresponding warning signage are securely in place, crews will apply fresh line marking before final site cleaning and demobilisation.

Temporary barricading will secure the active zones to prevent unauthorised access, and comprehensive traffic management will remain active for the duration of the works.

Pedestrians should note that the upgrades will require the temporary closure of existing crossings and adjacent footpaths while active pouring and cutting take place.

Work has been fast-tracked to start this month with teams actively on-site from September 21 to deliver the infrastructure upgrades. Final works are scheduled for completion in October 2026 to ensure minimal disruption to the local community while delivering improved safety standards for all residents and visitors to the area.
