20 years, 20 days of giveaways at Tyrepower Wonthaggi

FOR Kris Baker, twenty years of Tyrepower Wonthaggi not only feels like a milestone, but also like a personal victory.

“I’m proud of myself and my family,” he said, standing in the workshop that started it all.

“It wasn’t easy. The first couple of years were really tough, especially not being from around here. I moved down for the chance to build something for my wife and kids. I’ve made great friends through footy clubs like Kilcunda Bass and Wonthaggi Power, through coaching, committees, and through the business too.”

Now two decades on, Kris is celebrating the milestone in a way that feels right to him. From Saturday, November 1, Tyrepower Wonthaggi is giving away a $100 gift card every single day for 20 days. All you need to do is bring in a copy of the promotion, printed or on your phone, and if you are the first through the door that day, the prize is yours. The promotion can be found on Tyrepower Wonthaggi’s website or social media.

“It’s just about giving something back,” Kris said.

“I just like to give something back to people that might be struggling or need a hand.”

He said there may be even more giveaways to come.

“We’ve got heaps of merch and tyre gear sitting around, so we might hand out a bit more in future.”

What began in 2004 has grown into a true local business. Tyrepower Wonthaggi now serves customers across the area, from Wonthaggi and Phillip Island to Inverloch, Leongatha, Korumburra, Grantville and beyond.

“We’ve got more staff now and all the latest equipment,” Kris said.

“The oldest thing we’ve got is five years old. We keep upgrading, and we’ve employed a lot of local kids along the way.”

The team handles tyres, wheels, wheel alignments, brakes, puncture repairs and batteries.

“People don’t always realise we do batteries,” Kris said.

“And we do them at competitive prices.”

Asked about the secret to lasting twenty years, Kris was very straightforward.

“Be honest,” he said.

“Don’t lie to people. Tell them straight what you’re going to do, and then do it. Be nice, smile, be friendly, and you won’t run into many problems.”

He also had a message for locals who may be tempted to shop in the city.

“Prices might be a little cheaper in Melbourne, but the drive costs money and the waiting time costs money. It’s local businesses that sponsor your sporting clubs, your raffles, your fundraisers. Please think about that before you drive up the highway to save a few dollars.”

Kris and Mel would also like to thank their current and past staff members for their efforts over the years.
