WITH the counting all but done Liberal candidate Mary Aldred MP has been declared the new Federal Member for Monash.
According to the Divisional Returning Officer for the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) in Warragul with just 2592 votes still to be counted any remaining votes would not affect the result of the election.
Attending the declaration of the poll in Warragul last week Mary Aldred thanked former incumbent Russell Broadbent and his wife Bronwyn for decades of service.
Ms Aldred said it was the most significant privilege of her life, and she would dedicate her life to serving the people of Monash.
Greens candidate Terence Steele also attended the declaration of the poll and congratulated Mary Aldred on doing a fantastic job.
âWell done,â said Mr Steele.
âThe best candidate won.â
Mary Aldred said as a Member of Parliament her number one priority would be to stand up for Monash and stand up for the country.
âItâs been a busy few weeks but Iâm looking forward to making a strong contribution,â Ms Aldred said.
âLots of farmers and businesses are still grappling with the cost of living.
âFarmers are front-line struggling with drought-like conditions.
âThe significance of the dry conditions are not lost on me.
âI canât wait to get to work,â said Ms Aldred.
Likely to make her maiden speech to parliament in July, Mary Aldred said she would continue with what she called her âlistening postsâ or mobile offices.
âWe have a huge electorate with many small and remote areas.
âIt is important the Federal representative is available,â Ms Aldred said.
On a two-candidate preferred (TCP) basis Mary Aldred increased the Liberal vote by 2.9 per cent compared to the last election giving the Liberals a winning margin of 4.09 per cent.
Ms Aldred said she would always consider Monash to be a marginal seat.
