CAPE Paterson Surf Life Saving Club is celebrating Terence “Terry” Prendergast and his team taking home gold at the 2025 Sharkskin Australian Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championships held last week at South West Rocks, NSW.
IRB racing takes place over the winter months and plays a vital role in maintaining and refining lifesaving skills for both patrol and competition. In Victoria, the racing carnival spans across Victoria’s west coast and Port Phillip Bay beaches, where crews contend with everything from calm bays to challenging surf conditions.
Terry and his crew claimed gold in the Under 23 Male Teams Rescue event up against clubs from NSW and Queensland, delivering what he described as a “flawless race.”
“I couldn't be happier or prouder of my team. It's incredibly rewarding to see all the hard work, training, and racing in the Victorian carnivals pay off. Competing in the Australian U23 Male Teams Rescue event and racing in the Cape Paterson club’s boat, Arthur Phillips, we delivered what I can only describe as a flawless performance,” said Terry.
Terry’s passion for lifesaving began early, growing up in a family heavily involved in the club; his father is a Life Member, his mother has been a dedicated member for many years, and his sister, Sarah, is actively involved and participated in the Australian IRB Championships.
At the age of six, Terry joined Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club’s Nippers program. Over the years, he progressed through the age groups and qualifications to become a lifesaver and later Vice Club Captain. He only began IRB driving two years ago and entered competitive racing this year under Hampton Life Saving Club.
Terry’s inspiring journey is supported by many at the club, particularly long-time mentor Mark “Doogs” Legg, a 47-year Life Member of the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club.
Doogs played a key role in training Terry in both crew and driving skills over the past three years.
“He’s positive, absolutely loves it, and can’t get enough of it,” said Doogs.
“His dedication is commendable, not just to racing, but also to patrolling. I’m incredibly proud of him, not only for reaching the Australian Championships, but for coming away with a gold medal!”
Terry raced aboard Arthur Phillips, Cape Paterson’s racing IRB, which has gained a reputation as one of the fastest boats in Victoria this season.
Fellow Cape Paterson Life Saving Club members Aly Schapper and Sarah Prendergast were also part of the action at the Australian Championships, running boats for Williamstown LSV.
Terry’s achievement is already inspiring fresh interest in racing within the club.
“This is just the beginning,” added Terry.
“I’m already planning how we can grow the team and get more Cape members racing in 2026. Watch this space!”
At the recent AGM of Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club, newly appointed President Paul MacNeill commended Terry and the team on their success.
"Terry's outstanding achievement in taking Gold at the Nationals has enlivened the competitive spirit that surrounds surf lifesaving at Cape Paterson. Seeing our talented club members and equipment represented on the national stage is nothing short of amazing.
“Every part of this achievement shows the dedication of every aspect of the club, from the team that maintains the equipment to those on the ground supporting the team's effort, recognised by those who shine when it matters most. As the incoming President of this wonderful club, I'm excited to see how Terry, as the newly appointed Club Competition Manager, can harness this competitive spirit in many seasons to come."
