Council endorses Statement of Planning Policy to safeguard Bass Coast’s future

Bass Coast Shire Council has formally endorsed the final draft of its Statement of Planning Policy (SPP) as requested by the Victorian Government.

According to Council this will pave the way for the long-term protection and sustainable management of the region’s unique landscapes, townships, and environment.

Designed to provide a 50-year vision for land use planning in Bass Coast the SPP identified what makes the region distinctive and outlined strategies to preserve and enhance those attributes for current and future generations.

Council’s endorsement of the SPP drew enthusiastic applause from the Cape Paterson Residents and Ratepayers Association and Save Western Port Woodlands Group gathered in the public gallery where it was standing room only.

Bass Coast Shire was first declared a distinctive area and landscape under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 (the PE Act) in October 2019.

The Victorian Government has now legislated to protect and enhance distinctive areas and landscapes for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

The Bass Coast Statement of Planning Policy takes effect immediately paving the way for long-term protection and sustainable management of the region’s unique landscapes, townships, and environment.

The SPP is designed to provide a 50-year vision for land use planning in Bass Coast, identifying what makes the region distinctive and outlining strategies to preserve and enhance those attributes for current and future generations.

The SPP can be reviewed in 10 years.
