BASS Coast Historical Automobile Club doesn’t do things by half. When the club set out over three years ago the plan was to create a relaxed, family-friendly event that included all the things members loved about other Show n’ Shine events, and ensure the pieces they found monotonous weren’t part of the event at Dalyston.
And they’ve certainly achieved that.
There are no long, windy queues waiting to get in, a point BCHAC member and gatekeeper Phil Holland is very proud of. Entrance prices have been kept to a minimum, the motorcycle section has grown year on year, plus, this year, there are even more family activities, not to mention a new playground at the reserve itself.
“We’ve been able to grow the children’s entertainment this year,” BCHAC president Keith Tonkin said.
“There will be farm animals, face painting, balloon animals and bubbles.”
There are more than 19 awards up for grabs, with Keith proudly noting that this year’s trophies are “even better than the last.”
Amongst the categories are Best Engine, Best Original, Best Muscle Car, Best Paint, and Overall Motorcycle, with Bass Coast Shire Councillor Jon Temby and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale on hand to help present the prizes.
The Dave Trotter Memorial for American Cars will also be awarded, presented by Dave’s daughter, Rachel.
“We’re looking forward to a big attendance this year,” club secretary Brian Asbury said.
“Any old cars and bikes, all makes and models are welcome.
“It was great to see more bikes last year, and we’re really pleased to see that section keep growing. We hope the community have a great day.”
President Keith is hoping for clearer skies this time, after last year’s rain dampened the final hours.
“Everything is really well organised, even down to the road signage this year. We’ve learnt and improved each year. Kids under 16 are free, entry is $10 for adults and $5 for vehicles entered for judging.
“We’re really grateful to all our sponsors who make the event possible, including Wonthaggi Toyota and Kia Motors Wonthaggi, Tyrepower Wonthaggi, Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club, San Remo Bendigo Bank, AutoPro Wonthaggi, Alex Scott and Staff, RACV and Bass Coast Shire Council. They’re a good bunch of sponsors.”
Motorcyclist and new club member Peter is eager for this year’s event.
“I saw a feature on BCHAC’s bikes in the Sentinel-Times when we were looking to move down here, and it was right up my alley,” he said, adding that he’s now a regular on the club’s monthly rides.
“It’ll be good to see even more bikes involved this year.”
And whilst the Show n’ Shine in itself is just a yearly event, the BCHAC are far from a once-a-year gathering.
“We’re here for the vehicles to keep them alive,” Phil Holland said.
“They’re pieces of artwork,” added BCHAC member Tony.
“There’s a real sense of community and friendship, with a shared passion for old cars,” Theresa concluded.
Whether you’re a car enthusiast, bike lover or family looking for a great day out, don’t miss the third annual Bass Coast Historical Automobile Club Show n’ Shine at Dalyston Recreation Reserve, from 9am to 2pm on Saturday, November 16.
