Leongatha schools united in educational excellence

LEONGATHA Specialist School, Leongatha Secondary College, and Leongatha Primary School proudly stand as cornerstones of educational excellence in our community. Together, these three schools form the Leongatha Education Precinct – a collaborative hub dedicated to fostering environments where every student is supported to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

United by a shared commitment to student success, each school delivers high-quality, inclusive education that equips young people with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to navigate the challenges of today and build a bright future. The Leongatha Education Precinct is more than a geographical partnership – it’s a dynamic, community-focused alliance that celebrates learning at every stage and for every learner.

As we mark Education Week, we celebrate the strength of our shared vision and the positive impact of our schools in shaping confident, capable, and compassionate South Gippsland Specialist School young people.

The South Gippsland Specialist School (SGSS) is a vibrant and inclusive community where every student is celebrated and empowered to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment for students with diverse needs. With a strong focus on inclusion, we have become a beacon of opportunity and empowerment for young people from many different cultures and all walks of life. SGSS promotes respect, learning, safety, inclusion, and teamwork, values that guide every aspect of our educational programs.

At SGSS, we take a collaborative, holistic approach to education, with a dedicated team of teachers, education support staff, and Allied Health professionals working together to create personalised learning opportunities for each student. Our programs aim to develop academic, social, and life skills, fostering independence and self-esteem.

Our school is more than just a place for learning, it’s a community where students grow emotionally and socially.

Leongatha Primary School, a hub of growth and achievement, is committed to providing every student with a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

In 2025, the school continues to prioritise literacy and positive student engagement, integrating the Berry Street Educational Model to create a structured, nurturing learning environment.

From the Step into Prep program, which ensures smooth transitions for young learners, to exciting projects in the upper grades like the Grade 4 Biological Sciences unit and Grade 5 study of Australian history, the school is buzzing with academic energy. Camps, excursions, and cultural awareness activities, including the school’s Reconciliation Action Plan, provide students with rich learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. With a strong focus on respect, resilience, and inclusivity, Leongatha Primary is building a brighter future for its students, supported by a dedicated staff and engaged community.

At Leongatha Secondary College, the focus is on preparing students for success not only within the classroom but also in their future careers and as contributing community members. With a curriculum built on student voice to foster individual pathways, the college integrates character development, essential skills, and a passion for learning from Years 7 through 12.

In the Senior School, a new study and revision initiative helps students build essential study habits, with a strong emphasis on self-management, time management, and independent learning.

Workshops led by universities, wellbeing organisations, and community organisations, further support students’ individual learning needs. The school’s innovative spaces, co-designed by students, feature flexible furniture and mindfulness zones, ensuring a productive, student-centered environment.

All three schools are committed to providing an educational experience that equips students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to excel today and into the future.

Leongatha Secondary College
At Leongatha Secondary College, we are dedicated to assisting our students to be as successful as they can be during their time at the college, and in preparing them for their future beyond school.

To that end, we have co-constructed the college’s Effective Teacher and Learner Traits with a range of stakeholders from within our community, including students, staff, parents and carers. Our desire to embed these traits into our curriculum has been in direct response to needs being identified at a global, national and local level pertaining to successful and responsible citizenship.

Throughout Years 7, 8 and 9, students undertake learning linked directly to this work; exploring character traits, developing attitudes and forming knowledge about what skills can be practised and which translate into the workplace.

Within our Senior School we are also building upon this work, drawing from strong evidence relating to the academic benefits of revision and study routines. We are working with students from right across the Senior School, developing skills such as self-management, organisation and time management, and onto independent learning. We’re assisting and motivating students to take responsibility for their learning at school and to carry this into their future workplace.

Students are being worked with on a regular basis to understand the importance of developing these and being afforded time to practise these. In 2023, we have commenced a new study and revision initiative where students design, and shape their study program and environment.

Year 10, 11 and 12 students now participate in study and revision lessons within their programs and are being explicitly taught how to effectively study and explore strategies which suit their personal learning styles. This is taking place via an additionally scheduled session with each of their classroom teachers every fortnight. Teachers are sharing targeted strategies to revise key content and develop exam literacy skills and encouraging students to implement these during this time where they can also offer feedback and further tips.

Complementing these classroom sessions are skills workshops run by university students, we have also introduced longer before school and after school opening hours for extended individual study, as well as tutoring and homework club where students can have access to specialised subject teachers for individualised support.

Student’s are currently co-designing their innovative and flexible senior study space and classrooms to suit their needs for all of this work, with flexible sit/stand ergonomic furniture, collaborative conferences spaces and a calm space for mindfulness being incorporated into their design.

At Leongatha Secondary College we’re aiming to place students at the forefront of decisions and using their voices to shape the learning environment and programs to suit their needs. All in the effort to support them to be as successful as they can be during their time at the college, and in preparing them for their future beyond school.

Leongatha Primary School
2025 Principal’s Report: A year of growth and achievement

As we dive into Term 2 of 2025, Leongatha Primary School is bustling with energy, excitement, and a renewed focus on creating an enriching learning environment for all our students. The commitment from staff, students, and families continues to shape an outstanding school experience, with every grade level making significant strides in their educational journey.

Our Senior School is thriving with a structured literacy approach, fostering consistency across classrooms. The integration of the Berry Street Educational Model has further enhanced student engagement, with clear routines, brain breaks, and positive reinforcement of core values: respect, resilience, and a love of learning.

In the Junior School, our youngest learners have seamlessly transitioned into their classrooms, thanks to the well-organised Step into Prep program. This early foundation is proving invaluable, as students settle into reading and math lessons with confidence. With a dedicated team of educators, the first years of school are full of opportunity, engagement, and growth.

Grade 3, 4, 5, and 6 students are also diving deep into exciting projects. From the Grade 4 Biological Sciences unit and the Grade 5 study of Australian history through My Place, to the Grade 6 inquiry into fractions and the hands-on Winter Sport, every class is busy with innovative learning. Camps and excursions are adding to the excitement, with Grade 4 heading to Woorabinda and Grade 5 exploring Melbourne.

Beyond academics, we are making great strides in our Reconciliation Action Plan, actively involving students in cultural awareness activities and ensuring a whole-school approach to inclusivity.

Leongatha Primary continues to foster a nurturing environment where every child can thrive. With a dedicated staff and a supportive community, we look forward to another year of achievements in 2025. Thank you for your continued partnership in this journey!
