AFTER a gruelling election campaign and excruciatingly close count, new Monash MP Mary Aldred was sworn in as part of the 48th Parliament in Canberra on Tuesday this week.
Ms Aldred is one of just 28 Liberals in the 150-seat House of Representatives following in the footsteps of her father Ken Aldred who represented the Liberal Party in the Australian House of Representatives between 1975 and 1980 and again from 1983 to 1996.
Ms Aldred will be free to vote on all bills and motions but will not be clear to speak on the floor of the Parliament until she makes her maiden address next Tuesday.
“I’m scheduled to give my first speech next Tuesday,” said Ms Aldred who was sworn in today.
But Ms Aldred said there was a lot going on in the meantime with party meetings and familiarisation sessions.
Ms Aldred said she had received many messages of support ahead of the opening of the Parliament.
