Motorists diverted to the new bridges over Tarwin River

1 min read

THE South Gippsland Highway upgrade has reached the final construction milestone ahead of project completion in the coming weeks, with motorists now driving on the two new bridges over the Tarwin River.

A new alignment has removed nine sharp bends from the South Gippsland Highway between Old Koonwarra-Meeniyan Road and Minns Road, known as the Black Spur.

The two new bridges over the Tarwin River have been constructed as a part of the project, which will reduce the length of the highway by more than a kilometre between these two roads, from 3.4km to 2.3km.

Now that traffic is travelling along the new section of highway, the project team will be able to undertake works in areas they are currently unable to access.

There will be increased traffic management in place to enable the safe redirection of traffic.

With traffic travelling on the new section of highway, there will be intermittent lane closures between 7am and 6pm until the end of August while works continue to complete this important infrastructure project.

The speed limit will also remain at 60km/h (40km/h when completion works are occurring in specific areas) through the area.

Electronic message boards on the road will provide the latest information about what to expect.
