Over $36,000 raised for local families at Elders annual charity golf day

1 min read

FOR OVER 10 years, Elders South Gippsland annual charity golf day has been raising money to support those within the community battling cancer, illness or tragedy.
The drizzly morning didn't stop around 150 players teeing off at this year’s event at the Leongatha Golf Club on Friday May 23, helping to raise funds for local families and charities.
Following a fun- if not competitive - game of golf, lunch was served up, an auction was called and one lucky raffle winner won the ultimate prize, Keith Urban concert tickets and accommodation in Melbourne.
All proceeds will be donated to two separate causes, the first is, In Shiona’s Shoes – which raises funds for Carries Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation, established in memory of Shiona Berry and the second is for Jackson Jones, a local 17-year-old, who has recently been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
Elders Korumburra branch manager Rohan McRae explained that this will be the eleventh year that Korumburra and Leongatha branches have been running the event, which has raised in excess of $200,000 since 2014.
“The event originally began when family members of our staff were directly affected by cancer,” Rohan said.
“We are so proud to see how it has evolved to extend its support to local community members affected by illness or meaningful charities.”
Rohan acknowledges that the event would not be possible without the support of volunteers, and the surrounding community, who are extremely generous with both their time and donations. This year the final amount raised was just over $36,000.
“It never ceases to amaze us the level of support we receive from everyone in our industry, from abattoirs, feedlots, farmers, Elders’ branches and other agencies in our industry,” Rohan said.
“The whole community whole-heartedly gets behind the event, donating money and prizes towards an auction and raffle.”
