IT’S a massive undertaking, getting set up for the first round of the 2024 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores at the famous Wonthaggi Motocross Track off West Area Road, ahead of race day on Sunday, March 17.

An enormous mobile medical centre takes shape, Penrite’s own hospitality pavilion goes up, the operations centres for all the race teams with their flags and bunting, but more importantly with their clinical workshops, media centre, and of course all the food and drink on site.

It was all happening on Friday afternoon, and with special emphasis on the track, with its jumps, banked corners and bumps.

You can already see it’s a huge event in four classes: MX1, MX2, MX3 and MXW.

Reigning Australian champion in the premier class, Dean Ferris, is no stranger to Wonthaggi, having travelled down here numerous times over the years from south-east Queensland.

The seven-time Motocross Nations competitor, were the best-of-the-best meet at a super motocross event somewhere in the world, is looking forward to doing it all again as the leading rider in Craig Dack’s CDR Yamaha Team, Dack himself a former elite, world-class rider.

“This is the first race day of the season so, yeah, there’s a bit of nerves and a lot of expectation about what the year might bring,” said Dean on site at Wonthaggi on Friday.

“Looking forward to it.”

With support from the Bass Coast Shire Council and Destination Gippsland, the opening round of a new season in the nation’s premier motocross championship gets underway with a bang on Sunday morning and promises to produce handlebar-to-handlebar action all day.

After a long off-season, riders will be focussed on putting on a stellar show for motocross fans from far and wide and you’re welcome to come down and see all the action, even if it’s just to see the massive organisation that goes into an event like this.

The schedule includes practice, qualifying and racing all in one jam-packed Sunday with action from Australia’s best riders.

The action and excitement doesn’t stop on the track, except maybe to run around with the water cart to keep the dust down after a long, dry spell, with the chance to meet your favourite riders and grab an autograph or two.

Sunday’s weather is expected to be perfect for motocross watching, 28 degrees and occasionally cloudy. So, do yourself a favour and get down there.

Reigning Australian ProMX Champion, Dean Ferris, is eying off a great start to the new season at Wonthaggi on Sunday, March 17 as part of the CDR Yamaha Race Team, here with team owner Craig Dack, a legend in the sport now driving the Yamaha Motor Australia’s official motocross team after winning everything there is the win in the sport before retiring in 1992.
