THE Supreme Court of Victoria has taken the unprecedented step of deciding to broadcast the sentencing of Leongatha triple mushroom murderer Erin Patterson live.
Set to take place from 9.30am this Monday, September 8 in Court Room 4 at the Supreme Court in Melbourne, the sentencing hearing is being offered to news media live, provided that no promotion of their own programs or commercial advertisements appear at the same time.
A recording of the sentence will also be provided to news services afterwards.
However, the TV cameras will only be focused on the judge, Justice Christopher Beale. Neither the convicted murderer, Erin Patterson, nor the public gallery will be in view.
The Supreme Court has also cleared the way for these arrangements to be reported giving the public reasonable advice that the sentencing and Justice Beale’s summary of the case will be available to be viewed as it happens.
It is anticipated that ABC TV and a number of other news stations will broadcast the live feed.
Erin Patterson was found guilty of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder, relating to her estranged husband Simon Patterson’s parents Don and Gail Patterson and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson and husband Ian Wilkinson, the only person to survive the meal of beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms at her home on Saturday, July 29, 2023.
She was found guilty after a 10-week trial at Morwell between April and July this year.
