VFA confirms Cowes station to remain open

1 min read

THE Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has confirmed it will cut 35 positions, including 15 Fisheries Officer roles, as part of a revised operating model following recent budget constraints.

Despite the reductions, key community-facing stations including Cowes, Mornington, and Queenscliff will remain open, each staffed by four Fisheries Officers selected through an Expression of Interest process.

In contrast, stations at Braeside and Altona North will be closed. Staffing arrangements are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.

The VFA says the changes follow community consultation and aim to ensure resources are focused where they are most needed. Officers will continue to be fully authorised to conduct inspections and issue fines.

The authority also announced an increase in support for the Major Fisheries Crime Unit, which will receive additional resources to target organised illegal fishing operations.

Despite the challenges, the VFA reports strong compliance across the sector, with 90 per cent of the fishing community doing the right thing.

“The Victorian Fisheries Authority remains committed to supporting the fishing community with the services, education, and enforcement required by law,” a VFA spokesperson said.
