1 min read

THERE’s no place like home and the Bass Coast Pickers bring it all together for a hometown audience at the Wonthaggi Acoustic Music Festival.

Opening on Friday July 4 the Wonthaggi Acoustic Music Festival continues through to Sunday July 6 with a full weekend of live acoustic music including a street band, music workshops, singing, dancing, jamming, gypsy, flamenco and a gospel workshop.

With the soulful twang of bluegrass roots and a smattering of old-time fiddle, Bass Coast Pickers create a sound that’s as rich and timeless as the Bunurong coast itself.

This local ensemble has been captivating audiences with toe-tapping melodies, soaring fiddle lines and deeply moving vocals for over 12 years.

Opening the Wonthaggi Acoustic Music Festival on Friday evening (July 4) at 7pm will be Strat and Lyndal and Jim, and the John Flanagan Band.

The Invy Horn Street Jam gets things jumping Saturday morning from 9.30am followed by the Emerald By-Law Duo and Mojo Dreaming. Tracey Miller and the ACDC choir kick-off the afternoon’s entertainment with Los LLajtay Mantas and Karavanna Flamenca.

Karavana Flamenca has performed at a number of major festivals and events around Australia including the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Canberra National Folk Festival and Cygnet Folk Festival as well as support act for international giants the Gipsy Kings.

The band members for Karavana Flamenca are Miguel Ovejero (vocals, flamenco guitar), Demircan Ulugun (flamenco guitar, vocals), Lisa Ovejero (keys, cajon), David Matthews: (timbales, cajon) and Diego Neder (bass guitar).

Smiley Doherty completes the afternoon’s entertainment followed by the Bass Coast Pickers at 7.30pm and Davidson Brothers at 8.30pm.

A gospel singing workshop with Jacqui and Dani Paulson starts at 10am Sunday morning (July 6) followed by Learn a Tune or Two, WAM Band, Canti Popolari and Key Change before an Open Mic session on Sunday afternoon from 3.30pm to 6pm.
