Staying ahead of the carbon curve: Workshops for low emissions farming

ARE you a South Gippsland farmer curious about carbon farming? As markets, banks and insurance companies move to meet their carbon emissions commitments, farmers may increasingly need to demonstrate low-emission practices across their supply chains.

South Gippsland Landcare Network invites local farmers to attend two practical and interactive workshops in Leongatha and Korumburra this September. In session one, local soil scientist Declan McDonald will explain how improving soil health can increase soil carbon.

He will introduce the principles and practices of carbon farming and encourage farmers to bring their questions and discuss current management challenges with a focus on prioritising carbon capture. Nick Dudley, local farmer and presenter with experience on carbon projects for Agriculture Victoria, will demonstrate how to calculate and track farm emissions using carbon accounting tools, and how to develop a tailored action plan.

In session two, Nick will work hands-on with participants to enter farm data into a digital tool to calculate emissions and explore on-farm actions to offset them. Why attend? Declan and Nick are both engaging presenters with over 45 years of combined experience.

Attending both sessions is recommended to gain the full benefit of this independent and free learning opportunity. Morning tea and lunch are provided on both days.

This project is part of the Victorian Carbon Farming Outreach Program, supported by funding from the Commonwealth of Australia through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, under the National Carbon Farming Outreach Program.

It is delivered in partnership with Agriculture Victoria, 10 Catchment Management Authorities, Landcare Victoria, and other organisations.
