A riot of colour and fragrance at 35th Annual South Gippsland Orchid Show

1 min read

REKNOWNED for their vivid colours and long-lasting blooms Cymbidiums are no doubt the most common orchid found in local home gardens, but they’re not alone.

Celebrating another year of growing and exhibiting amazing orchids the 35th Annual South Gippsland Orchid Show at the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club promises to be a feast for the eyes and senses.

An amazing variety of orchids will be on display at the show promising a riot of colour and an abundance of flowers to admire.

Show Marshall Julie Kilgour expects over 300 exhibits at this year’s show.

“The early bird sales of plants are always popular,” said Julie.

“It’s like a sale at Myers,” she said.

Eager to be first through the door early bird buyers are rarely disappointed.

“People come to see what’s available and to get inspiration from the prizewinning orchids on display,” said Julie.

Cymbidiums are always a favourite and for good reason, they’re showy, have an abundance of blooms, and are sturdy and relatively easy to grow.

Australian native Dendrobiums are also popular, and for something a little different Zygopetalum is a beautiful and delicately scented orchid.

Champion orchid grower Lita Gill is justly proud of her award winning achievements including Champion Orchid of the Show in 2024 for her Dendrobium Speciosum.

First time exhibitors Christine Leyshan and Janet Elsworth will have the chance to enter their individual blooms in the novice categories.

The annual South Gippsland Orchid Show is the place to go for advice on orchid selection and growing and for demonstrations of repotting orchids for best results.

The 35th Annual South Gippsland Orchid Show will be open from 9.30am to 4pm at the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club in Graham Street Wonthaggi from Friday September 12 to Saturday September 13.

“We expect 1,000 people through the doors,” said Julie.

“Last year was our biggest show ever.”

New members are always welcome.
