Methamphetamine intercepted

POLICE from Wonthaggi patrolling the South Gippsland Highway near the Bass Highway merge in the vicinity of Lang Lang intercepted a car driven by a 31-year-old female from Cowes, early on the morning of October 17.

She was found to be a disqualified driver with a homemade taser in her car.

Her passenger, a 42-year-old woman from Cowes, was found to be in possession of over 30 grams of methamphetamine and a quantity of GHB.

The passenger was arrested and bailed until January 25 when she will appear in Korumburra Magistrates’ Court.

The suspended driver will get a summons to appear in Korumburra Magistrates’ Court at a future date.

Don’t make it easy for thieves

SERGEANT Tim Ryan of Wonthaggi police reiterated the call for people to stop leaving valuables in cars.

“We’re encouraging people to remove items from cars and make it harder for offenders,” he said.

Sergeant Ryan noted items such as wallets and handbags continue to be left in vehicles overnight, often clearly visible.

Even if the vehicle is locked, such valuables are an invitation for those with light fingers.

“All offenders have to do is break a window or open an unlocked door,” Sergeant Ryan said.

Kongwak hoon driving

WHILE on patrol early Sunday morning, Wonthaggi police impounded two vehicles for alleged hoon driving in Kongwak, with Korumburra police then booking friends of those car owners for speeding to the scene.

As they were travelling along Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road, Wonthaggi police observed an enormous quantity of grey smoke coming from the vicinity of the roundabout at the intersection of Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road, Kongwak Road and Bena-Kongwak Road just after 1.30am.

Driving through the smoke, they located a white 1994 Holden Commodore utility which had just finished doing multiple ‘burn outs’ at several locations at the roundabout.

Police then observed a crowd of people nearby on the side of the road, who were watching the illegal goings on.

Police allege the Holden Commodore utility was driven by an 18-year-old male from Outtrim and that the vehicle was unsafe to be on the road, with part of its front missing and the tyres barely functional.

The utility was not registered and had no registration plates.

Police then noticed that a maroon 1998 Subaru G97B wagon, which was parked nearby, had been doing multiple ‘burn outs’ in the vegetation and mulch of the roundabout, causing substantial damage.

They allege the Subaru was driven by a 19-year-old male from Sandy Point, who at the time of doing ‘burn outs’ had three passengers in the vehicle.

Police also say the driver of that vehicle was not displaying ‘P’ plates.

It is also alleged that substances such as fuel and oil had been placed on the road to increase the ability of the vehicles to make smoke and leave marks on the roadway.

The driver of the Holden Commodore utility will shortly be getting a summons to attend Korumburra Magistrates’ Court for offences including improper use of motor vehicle, having an unsafe vehicle, failure to display ‘P’ plates, and using an unroadworthy vehicle.

The driver of the Subaru will also shortly be getting a summons to attend Korumburra Magistrates’ Court for offences including criminal damage, improper use of motor vehicle and failure to display ‘P’ plates.

Both drivers now have to pay $1150 each, with the Subaru and utility impounded for 30 days.

Police said the sight of the two vehicles leaving on the back of a tow truck wasn’t popular with spectators.

One spectator, an 18-year-old male from Ruby, will be receiving multiple infringement notices for offences including obstructing a roadway and having an unsecured vehicle, having parked across Kongwak Road.

During a search of some of the people involved, a 17-year-old male from Mount Eccles was found to be in possession of a prohibited item.

Shortly after the tow truck left, police from the Korumburra Police Station detected two vehicles, one driven by an 18-year-old male from Ruby, and one driven by an 18-year-old male from Leongatha, driving at excess speed in Korumburra.

Both these vehicles were intercepted on Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road Jumbunna, with the drivers on their way to see their friends who were now waiting on the side of the road in Kongwak following the impoundment of their vehicles.

The drivers intercepted in Jumbunna will receive infringement notices for speeding.

“Your local police in Bass Coast and South Gippsland are out patrolling areas where the community has raised issues, and are committed to stopping dangerous and anti-social behaviour on the roads,” police stated in a Facebook post about the busy start to Sunday.
