South Gippsland District Scouts recognises volunteers

RECENTLY at the Phillip Island Scout Hall, South Gippsland District Scouts Annual Reports and Presentations gathering was held, attended by 80 members of Scouting in Bass Coast and South Gippsland with members of the Wellington based 1st Yarram Scout group joining on Zoom.
Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath MP and South Gippsland Shire Councillor Scott Rae attended as VIPs representing the Community.
“This has been the first time the event has been held on Phillip Island and it was nice to bring all our Scouting community including many parents together in this part of our district which covers three local governments, mostly South Gippsland Shire and Bass Coast Shire, but we are also home to 1st Yarram Scout group from the Wellington Shire,” said Wombat Lyons - acting District Commissioner for South Gippsland.
“On the night, we learnt that Councillor Scott Rae who was the only local government representative with us has been a past member of Scouting.”
Volunteers from the District team as well was youth members from various groups shared highlights of the Scouting year. 1st Inverloch Venturer Scout Charlie Ogden spoke on her travel to the New Zealand Venture where she undertook canyoning as an adventurous activity. Charlie has been a recipient of the Queen Scout award during the year.
Youth members also spoke about the recent Cuboree event, the district camp called Camp Neon held at Gilwell Park and many weeknight activities they have enjoyed this year with cooking night featuring regularly.
A big part of the gathering was presenting awards:


• Coal Creek Venturers based at 2nd Korumburra were named Venturer Unit of the Year
• William Cook of 1st Yarram and Bailey Webster of 1st Inverloch were Scouts of the Year.
• Evelyn Shannon of Leongatha Scout Group was Joey Scout of the Year.
• Willow Rosen of 1st Inverloch was Cub Scout of the Year.
Colin Murray adult support at 1st Mirboo North was recognised for the many hours he supports scouting, and the connections he builds between the scout group and the CFA.
The Shirley Reeves OAM Good Housekeeping Award went to 1st Yarram and the Media Award to 1st Fish Creek, our smallest group in one of the smaller towns but doing great work on Facebook.
The big award of the night was Leader of the Year to Maree Pascoe, South Gippsland District Cub Scout Leader who battled cancer this year but maintained her volunteering.
