Badminton program a smashing success

BADMINTON is making a comeback in Wonthaggi.

The challenges of COVID-19 caused some setbacks to the junior program, but the Shuttle Smash initiative has started to breathe new life into the Wonthaggi Badminton Club.

Aimed at children aged between five and 12, Shuttle Smash was well received during July and August.

Fifteen children took part in the program, with an influx of young families taking interest in the sport.

The program promoted badminton by involving the participants in fun and inclusive activities to develop fundamental skills and physical literacy.

The program came about after club representative Kim Wong and Badminton Victoria was successful in securing a grant.

“We decided to use this funding to run this Shuttle Smash program and Badminton Victoria supplied us with equipment, training materials and helped to cover the costs,” club representative Adrian Falvey said.

“Without this support, we couldn’t have done it. The program was a success, and we’ve been able to carry on the junior group since the program finished a few weeks ago.

“The biggest difficulty has been raising awareness that this is even running. We’ll probably run it again and have plans for a few more promo activities for the juniors over the next few months.”

The club welcomes people of all ages and skill levels.

Following the success of Shuttle Smash, Wonthaggi will extend its junior program until October to ensure children can continue to develop their skills.

Badminton Victoria congratulated the Wonthaggi Badminton Club for its outstanding efforts to promote the program and sport.

The club’s commitment and hard work ensured the success of Shuttle Smash and the growing enthusiasm for badminton the community.
