Inverloch’s ‘Off-Peak’ Nippers Program makes a splash

THE sand at Inverloch is seeing plenty of action this spring, but it isn’t just the usual holiday crowd. Over 50 local children have donned the famous Nippers cap as part of the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club’s (ISLSC) highly successful "Off-Peak" program.

Running from October to December, this initiative was designed with a clear goal: to support local families. The club recognised that the traditional summer Nippers season is often too busy for residents to commit to or booked out by holidaymakers. This off-peak alternative gives children aged seven to 12 the chance to participate in a calmer, community-focused environment.

Club captain Holly Foster, who has been the driving force behind the program, believes the program is vital for building year-round water confidence in the town’s youth.

“ISLSC created this program because our surf club exists to serve our local community, as it’s in their backyard,” said Holly.

“We recognised a gap in our local membership and realised we weren’t always reaching the people who use our beach year-round. The Off-Peak program was our way of changing that and giving local kids and families the chance to build water confidence and connect in a relaxed, community-focused setting.”

It’s certainly been a community effort, with a team of committed volunteers acting as age managers and water safety crew.

“I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who’s helped bring this program to life. And to the families who trusted us with their children and embraced something new, thank you,” said Holly.

“Nippers” is an education program that teaches children essential survival skills. Rather than just swimming laps, participants learn how to identify dangerous currents (rips), how to signal for help, and how to negotiate the waves safely.

The response from the community has been strong, with the program reaching capacity quickly.

“My children have loved being part of Inverloch’s Off-Peak Nippers this year,” says local parent Jess Stone.

“It’s so convenient to get to after school, and they enjoy spending time with their friends while growing more confident in the water each week. Watching them progress from cautious waders to eager board riders has been wonderful. Their broad smiles are easy to spot from the beach. The sense of community is a real highlight too, and they especially look forward to sharing dinner at the club with their friends after each session,” says Jess.

With over 50 smiles on the beach every week, the success of the Off-Peak Nippers proves that water safety is a priority in Inverloch, no matter the season.
