LEONGATHA Knights Senior men triumphed 2-0 over last year’s Grand Final winners Drouin Dragons.
In their first home game of the season, the Knights enjoyed strong local support as they battled for dominance over a well-structured Drouin side.
With the play relatively equal and some magnificent midfield play from the Knights, the game went into halftime nil all.
The Knights entered the second half with renewed determination and an elevated sense of urgency on the ball.
It was a brilliant strike from midfielder Sven Gebele that sent the ball tearing into the bottom left corner of the goal, just out of reach of the Drouin keeper, securing the lead for the Knights.
A tidy tap-in from an unmarked Noel O’Donnell added Leongatha’s second goal.
Female Football Week: Junior Girls Representative Showcase
On Friday May 2, the Gippsland Soccer League hosted neighbouring association Latrobe Valley Soccer League for a two match friendly between their respective U14 and U16 Girls representative squads.
Both games were hosted under lights by Mirboo North SC at Walter J Tuck Reserve and though the night air was chilly, the atmosphere was magnificent.
Friday signified the start of Female Football Week, an annual celebration and showcase of the achievements of females in football, and what better way to celebrate than to cheer on the local female talent rising through the ranks of our local soccer leagues.
The matchups also served as precursors to the Victorian Country Championships, which are set to take place across the King’s Birthday weekend at Albury.
Both games were highly competitive and played in excellent spirits, that being appreciated by the watching crowd.
The Gippsland Soccer League would like to thank the LVSL U14 and U16 Girls squads for travelling to its venue and wish them all the best for the upcoming Country Championships campaign.
