THE Phillip Island Boardriders Club held its Annual General Meeting on Sunday, August 3, ushering in a new season with strong leadership and renewed focus on community, youth development, and core surfing values.
Jake Eisen was re-elected as President, continuing his commitment to the club he’s been part of since childhood. “It’s a great community, and I’m looking forward to building on the momentum we’ve created,” Jake said.
A major announcement on the night was the appointment of Walter Hiatt as Club Captain. A four-time Open champion, Walter has been around the club since he was a baby. After a stint with Merewether Boardriders Club, where he was regarded as one of their best surfers, he’s now back on the Island and ready to lead with professionalism and confidence.
“Walt’s been the quiet achiever for years,” said outgoing captain Ash Easton. “Handing the reins to him feels right — he’s respected in the water and brings a lot of experience.”
Ash was warmly thanked for his huge contribution over the past three seasons and remains an active leader in the captains’ committee, which this year will also include Harry de Roth and Adrian Maier — both well-respected surfers and club champions, who bring experience, energy and support to Walt in the year ahead.
Emily Scott was also acknowledged with a big welcome as she stepped into the Vice President role. A long-time contributor to the club’s operations, Emily brings passion, reliability, and a sharp eye for detail. Her move into this leadership position is a massive asset for the club’s future.
Nala Taylor was appointed Mal Captain, and a big shout-out went to Eddie Maier, who put his hand up as the new Junior Representative. Both appointments reflect the club’s strong focus on building the next generation.
The broader general committee remains solid, with experienced hands backing the executive team and helping deliver events, programs, and community engagement throughout the year. Joanna Stubbs O’Reilly and outgoing Vice President Geoff Russell were also recognised for their continued dedication and work behind the scenes.
The club’s mental health and wellbeing focus, including the yoga and wellness sessions now running out of the renovated clubhouse, continues to be a valuable part of its offering — helping to create a safe, positive space for all members.
With a big season ahead, the club looks forward to welcoming new and returning members, more team-based events, and hopefully a strong showing at the Australian Boardriders Battle under Walt’s leadership.
“We’re proud of what the club stands for, and we’re excited to keep things moving in a positive direction,” Jake said.
