Southern Rail Trail running festival attracts hundreds

2 min read

NOT everyone may have been up to running 100 kilometres but for the elite and amateur, young and old, mums, dads, grandmas and grandads and plenty of young runners there was a distance to suit everyone at the inaugural Southern Rail Trail Run at Leongatha.

Starting at Port Welshpool at 6.45am the 100-kilometre ultra-marathon was definitely a race for the elite only with the Dads Running Club relay team arriving in Leongatha eight hours and 35 minutes later.

Lone individual runner Merlin Gammon was not far behind clocking eight hours and 47 minutes.

The first team home in the 72-kilometre ultra-marathon which started at 7.30am in Port Welshpool was the BPC relay team arriving in Leongatha six hours and 57 minutes later.

Welcome to the thrill of trail running.

Embracing breathtaking scenery, vibrant community spirit, and unforgettable challenges on trails where history and adventure collide runners were able to experience South Gippsland’s rich rail history.

The first runner to return home from the round-trip to Stony Creek for the full 42.2-kilometre marathon starting at 8.30am in Leongatha was Kane Iskra in three hours and 26 minutes.

The first runner home in the 21.1 kilometre half marathon which started at 9am in Stony Creek was Kyle Standfield arriving in Leongatha one hour and 23 minutes later.

The 10 kilometres and five kilometres fun runs started at 9am at Leongatha with the first runners returning home 25 minutes later, and a two-kilometre free family dash was a dead heat between young Nathan Moore and Brody Jarvis completing the distance in just six minutes and one second.
