Why we’re just wild about Harry Hoekstra - six on debut!
The Vics are getting hammered in their first Sheffield Shield match of the season at St Kilda’s Junction Oval but favourite Koonwarra-Leongatha RSL son, Harry Hoekstra, has performed heroically in his debut match. See details.
VICTORIA is getting hammered by South Australia in the first Sheffield Shield match of the season at St Kilda’s Junction Oval this week.
But Koonwarra-Leongatha RSL favourite son, Harry Hoekstra, has performed heroically in his debut match for the Bushrangers.
Suffering after a hard day in the field, after taking a further three wickets off 20 overs for the Vics on Day Two, Hoekstra was back at the crease on Day Three, taking a further two wickets to finish with a bag of six, in his first Sheffield Shield match no less.
He copped a bit of stick from a rampant Noah McFadyen also on debut for South Australia, making 134 off 174 balls, as the last man out, getting the Redbacks to 508 off 135 overs at a run rate of 3.74, and finished with the inflated figures of 6/103.
But it was an awesome effort all the same, especially after hitting up the top score of 45 runs of 122 deliveries on Day One.
After a delayed lunch, while Victoria prised out the final wicket, it’s Victoria’s turn again to bat but Hoekstra will be hoping to get his feet up in the sheds now, until Saturday at least, knowing that he’s already done the best he could possibly do on debut – a bag of six wickets and top score in the First Innings.
Hoekstra has already earned warm congratulations from his home club, including former coaches, not only for getting his first Victorian Sheffield Shield cap, but for doing himself and his former club proud.
The Vics look to be under the pump, trailing by 264 on the first innings, but with the chance of rain overnight, they might yet be able to salvage a draw.
