The South Gippsland Shire Council has engineered almost $4 million to replace four bridges on Bass Valley Road between Bena and Poowong.

FOUR single-lane bridges along Bass Valley Road between Bena and Poowong will be replaced following a successful $3.03 million grant application by South Gippsland Shire Council.

Council was one of nine councils to receive funding in the most recent round of the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP).

All four bridges have experienced deterioration and are reaching the end of their lifespan. South Gippsland Shire Council has committed to providing $758,400.00 to ensure the completion of the bridge renewal works.

The total project cost is $3,792,000 with works expected to commence in 2025, following further project planning and design.

The successful grant funding stems from Council’s ongoing advocacy efforts with Commonwealth government colleagues during our visits to Canberra.

South Gippsland Shire Chief Executive Officer, Kerryn Ellis, welcomed the announcement.

“We are very pleased to have received funding to replace the deteriorating bridges along Bass Valley Road. This extensive upgrade is a significant investment in our community. Council has continued to advocate for additional road funding, and we look forward to enhancing the safety of one of South Gippsland’s older roads,” Ms Ellis said this week.
