EMERGENCY services rushed to Graham Street in Wonthaggi early Monday afternoon after a vehicle mounted the footpath and crashed into a local pizza restaurant.

The incident unfolded around 1pm at 163 Graham Street. According to Wonthaggi Police Sergeant Rob Hardy a single vehicle driven by a local woman in her mid-60s moved rapidly forward and across the pavement before ploughing into the storefront.

Fortunately, the business was closed at the time, avoiding potential injuries inside.

Initial police investigations suggested the incident began when the woman was attempting to reverse out of a parking space. Her car collided with a truck travelling westbound along Graham Street. Sergeant Hardy stated that following the initial impact, the driver appears to have panicked, her vehicle then accelerating rapidly forward, mounting the curb and striking the shop front.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for injuries sustained during the sudden impact. She was subsequently transferred by ambulance to Wonthaggi Hospital for further evaluation and observation. No drugs or alcohol were detected.

The area was cordoned off for an hour as emergency crews worked to clear the debris and ensure the structural integrity of the damaged building. The building will undergo an inspection before being cleared to re-open once the shop window is repaired.

Police are continuing their investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance and have urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
