Wonthaggi Power rolls out its pitch for $75,000 from the community
Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club has launched a virtual turf appeal to raise $75,000 in order to get the town's main oval open in time for the 2027 season. See details
TO THEIR credit, the State Government and the Bass Coast Shire Council are doing their bit.
Between them they’ve committed $738,773 ($250,000 funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Country Football Netball Program) to a major redevelopment of the main Wonthaggi sports oval.
But it’s going to take more than that to get the main sports oval in the town open again in a timely manner - $75,000 more to be exact.
While the main Wonthaggi oval is used for a range of events including football and netball, of course, as the home of the mighty Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club, it also gets a workout as the venue for school sports, community events, visiting teams and a range of other activities.
It’s impossible to contemplate it being out of action for upwards of 12 months, including right through the next football season, while the grass grows from planted sprigs.
But through the cooperation of the shire and after negotiations with a turf supply company, Wonthaggi Power has come up with a plan to turf the oval, after the drainage and reconstruction works have been completed.
And they’ve launched a virtual turf appeal to raise the necessary funds on the Wonthaggi Power website HERE
“We’re incredibly grateful to the State Government and Bass Coast Shire for their significant support of this project. The virtual turf appeal is another way our club and the wider community can get behind the redevelopment and help speed up the process,” said Wonthaggi Power president Darren Brown.
“We’re aiming to raise $75,000 to lay turf rather than grow the grass from scratch, which would allow us to get the ground back into use much sooner. But we can’t do it without the support of our community.
“Whether it’s $500 or $5,000, every contribution will make a difference. We’re asking people who have a connection to the ground and understand what it has meant to Wonthaggi and the wider community over many years to get behind the appeal and help us bring it back to life sooner.
“This ground has been a huge part of our community for generations, and getting it back up and running is about much more than football. It’s about providing a place for sport, recreation and community connection for years to come.
“We encourage everyone to visit the website for our ‘Re-turf Our Oval’ appeal and consider making a donation to help get our ground back where it belongs.”
