Uncle Bobs Club volunteers Melissa Whelan, Christine Ward and Billy Hansch are looking forward to donating cardboard drive proceeds to The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, with the ongoing initiative also benefitting children’s health in other hospitals.

CARDBOARD continues to play its part in raising valuable funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), through the ongoing efforts of members of the South Gippsland Group of Uncle Bobs Club.

Volunteers Christine Ward and Billy Hansch collect cardboard year round from businesses in Korumburra and Leongatha, with fees charged raising funds for RCH and Uncle Bobs Club.

Half the money raised goes to the RCH Good Friday Appeal, with the rest remaining with Uncle Bobs Club to direct to other children’s health projects.

Long-term volunteer for the South Gippsland Group of Uncle Bobs Club, Melissa Whelan, outlined the broad approach the organisation takes to assisting children in Victoria.

“The Uncle Bobs Club supports projects for hospitals requiring (funding) for their children’s wards,” she said.

That may mean providing financial assistance towards the cost of required medical equipment.

Melissa spoke about what drives Billy and Christine to collect cardboard four or five days a week.

“They are passionate about the Children’s Hospital and this continues to motivate them to find more businesses to collect from,” she said.

All collected cardboard is taken to JJ’s Waste and Recycling in Leongatha.

The South Gippsland branch of Uncle Bobs Club has operated cardboard collection fundraising for approximately 40 years.

Such is the dedication of Billy and Christine, the Uncle Bobs Club head office purchased the van they now use to replace its outdated predecessor, enabling the cardboard collection initiative to continue and ensuring the name of the community-oriented organisation is visible and recognised.
