LEONGATHA Business Association president Johnny Ozols said that although it wasn’t a bumper Christmas trading period in the town, there is plenty to be positive about.

“It was encouraging to see so many people up the street; Sportfirst’s Christmas photos were a great hit and the line was out the door most times,” Johnny said of Santa’s appeal locally.

He noted that as well as the efforts of the business association, the annual hall sale held at Leongatha Memorial Hall was an example of local traders cooperating, with Panthers Menswear, Shan’s Lingerie & Leisurewear and Sportfirst combining to run the event.

Johnny highlighted that pre-Christmas sale as a success, noting the array of bargains available appealed to shoppers.

While pleased with the event’s success, he expressed disappointment about an overnight break-in that occurred during the sale.

But that was outweighed by the overall positive nature of the Christmas period.

He noted that local traders are doing well despite the current challenges faced around Australia in terms of high living costs.

“It’s an indication of a healthy local economy, and if people are able to spend money in town, that would mean surely that the farmers are having a good year, trades are doing ok and we’re a little bit insulated, so to me it’s pretty positive,” Johnny said.

Looking ahead to 2023, Johnny is enthusiastic about the benefits that will flow from improvements in the Leongatha Railway Station precinct, where works are ongoing.

Longer term, he hopes for measures to draw more people to Leongatha, particularly a boost in accommodation options.
