Collectables that shape history

THE finer things shape history and together the committee members of the Wonthaggi RSL and their fellow collectors shared their military possessions at a swap meet and market; with each piece holding a unique story.

Whether members went to war, or just had a common interest in military history – together they have gathered at the Wonthaggi RSL Hall displaying their uniforms, books, and archives, dating back to first world war.

Valued members and committee members Frank Stupar, Bert Orr, and Melissa and Chloe Lucas are volunteering their time until 2pm to hold a sausage sizzle for the community, raising funds for the Wonthaggi RSL.

Inside the hall, member (Major) Graham Eva is displaying his vast range of military uniform – selling this piece of history that shown his time in service. CPI Wayne Fuller who served from 1964-1975 shared that this uniform of Graham’s was after his time. “We never had polished boots in my time,” said Wayne.  

Moving through the swap meet, Geoff Trigg shared his fascination with military history stating that he never served but has been collecting pieces since he was 10 years old.

Geoff is selling helmets in original condition that back dated to 1916 – including the French WW2 Army Helmet and the Dutch/Rumantan Helmet from WW2 used in Russia by the Romanians.

“In my lifetime of collecting I have travelled from Adelaide to Brisbane attending swap meets and garage sales collecting items that take my interest, and I have researched each piece I owe. It’s important for me to share these items with people that may also have a common interest in military history,” said Geoff.

“I will continue to collect and research, because there is always something new to learn.”
