Coronet Bay playgroup receives $500 grant to enhance public program

2 min read

THE Coronet Bay Playgroup, a cherished community hub for children aged 0 to 5 years, has recently received a generous $500 grant from Playgroup Victoria. This funding will be utilised to acquire new equipment and to provide a range of engaging activities for local families.

Run by dedicated volunteers Carleen Taylor and Brooke Jeffery, the playgroup aims to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes socialisation among young children and their parents.

“With this grant, the playgroup has been able to purchase new equipment, making it an even more attractive option for families seeking a supportive community space,” said Carleen.

The initiative is particularly beneficial for women navigating postpartum challenges, offering them a chance to connect with other parents while their children play and learn. The playgroup encourages social connection not only for children but also for their siblings, ensuring that all family members feel welcome.

“Registration for the playgroup is not mandatory, but it is encouraged to help organisers plan activities that meet the needs of families,” Carleen said. “Each week, the playgroup offers new activities to cater to the varied interests of babies and toddlers.” Parents have the opportunity to connect while their toddlers engage in alternative activities designed to stimulate their creativity.

The structure of the playgroup is informal, allowing families to come together in a relaxed atmosphere. Participants can enjoy both indoor and outdoor spaces, featuring a large picnic table perfect for morning tea. “The playgroup has recently introduced sensory tables, thanks to the grant from Playgroup Victoria, and this helps the children as they explore different textures and materials.

“To help cover the costs associated with renting the hall, a nominal fee of $5 per family is requested. Additionally, families are asked to bring a piece of fruit to share during morning tea,” said Carleen. “Tea and coffee are provided for parents, as the focus remains on creating a homely and welcoming environment where families can feel comfortable to connect with one another.”

The Coronet Bay Playgroup continues to thrive as an essential resource for the community, providing a space of support to young families. With the new grant, Carleen Taylor and Brooke Jeffery are excited to expand their offerings, ensuring that the playgroup remains a place where children can grow, learn, and develop lasting friendships in a warm, nurturing setting.
