THE daffodils may already be in bloom in Leongatha, but you might be lucky to see one this year despite the best efforts of South Gippsland Shire Council.
Just metres from the home of the Leongatha Daffodil Festival the first few yellow blooms just emerging alongside the Leongatha Memorial Hall were ripped from their garden beds over the weekend.
With the Leongatha Daffodil and Floral Show encompassing the Daffodil Festival, Camellia Show and Photo Exhibition still a month away on August 28, 29 and 30, few daffodils may be left if the blooms continue to disappear overnight.
Cutting daffodils early does not encourage more flowers.
Allison Jones CEO South Gippsland Shire Council said picking daffodils and other flowers is not a common issue in South Gippsland.
“Our crews take great pride in creating vibrant, colourful spaces for everyone to enjoy, so we appreciate the community leaving these floral displays untouched for all to enjoy.
“The community is welcome to pick items from our edible gardens.”
