THE edible gardens collaboration with Artspace sparked artistic style and inspiration for local artists at the inaugural exhibition, open now at Wonthaggi Artspace until March 3.
Artspace curator Ursula Theinert and Co-coordinator of Bass Coast Edible Gardens Maddy Harford collaborated the annual edible gardens event with an exhibition to show support for artists and Bass Coast Adult Learning (BCAL) in Wonthaggi.
“The edible gardens are BCAL’s biggest fundraiser,” said Maddy and Ursula has shown great support for the community event. Maddy officially launched the exhibition on Sunday afternoon in the presence of the exhibiting artists sharing that they gathered to celebrate not one but two kinds of art and creativity.
“The weaving of these events is a remarkable combination of art as an expressive record of life and experiences, and the art of the garden and of gardening,” said Maddy.
“There are many similarities and lessons that can be transferred between the two kinds of art. At its core, gardening is about hope for the future, and artists also seek to leave something behind that represents their ideals, and just like gardening a piece or art is never quite finished, with artists and gardeners wanting their creations to change over time as their vision changes.”
These artists were invited to exhibit their works that represented this collaboration, and on Sunday, artist Jenny McDonald shared her art that signified her connection with art and garden - with the most extraordinary ‘photo on art paper’ pieces - ‘Sunflower’ and ‘The Nursery’ that characterise both her garden at home and a memorable trip to Northern Queensland where she photographed black perch in the gardens of a historic castle.
“The quality of printing on art paper is absolutely fabulous,” said Jenny. Jenny has touched on a range of mediums both in this exhibition and in her time as an artist; too showcasing her technique in watercolour with her piece ‘The Half Dozen’.
The Edible Gardens Exhibition is open until March 3 at Wonthaggi Artspace.
