Premier pledges support for Mirboo North community

1 min read

THE Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio have addressed the community and the assembled media during their visit to the storm-torn town of Mirboo North on Friday morning.

She said that at least 16 houses had been completely destroyed in the town but that the number was likely to rise as assessments continue.

"As you can hear, the recovery work is still in full swing," said the Premier of the sound of chainsaws in the background.

Ms Allan acknowledged that much of the storm damage was confined to a narrow path through Mirboo North, but also impacting a number of other areas as well, as the storm cell surged through the area.

Ms Allan also reflected on the loss of life, the death of a Darliamurla dairy farmer in his 50s, who was out on his quad bike attending to his cows, when he was hit by flying debris.

She said emergency grants would be made available and there were also loss of power payments as well with the likelihood that some AusNet customers would be offline for a week or more.

Asked by the Sentinel-Times if there would be further support in the long-term to aid the recovery, Ms Allan said the needs of the community would be assessed.

The State Opposition Leader John Pesutto also spoke after surveying the damage in the town.

“The damage has been heartbreaking for so many families and organisations here in Mirboo North,” Mr Pesutto said.

“I think everyone was shocked as they came into the town and saw the path of destruction that the storm has created.

“So, it’s very extensive and it will take many, many months if not years for a full clean up and replanting.

“There are still many hazards that remain.”

Mr Pesutto said he was particularly impressed with the resilience and determination of the locals but also pledged the support of the opposition in getting the community what it needed now and in the long-term to recover.
