KILCUNDA Bass Football Netball Club’s junior girls’ footy training kicked off on Friday afternoon.

Twenty-four girls registered for four training sessions, which will culminate in a game against the Phillip Island junior girls team at Cowes on August 6.

Kilcunda Bass’ junior coordinator Cameron Chasemore said he was rapt with Friday’s turn out and hoped the one-off match would motivate local clubs to form junior girls’ teams and establish a competition in 2024.

“We hope some of the local clubs will get on board – a few have expressed interest,” he said.

The junior girls division would be open to girls between the ages of 10 and 14.

Girls of all levels of experience are encouraged to come along and get involved.

“I coach local basketball and I asked some of the girls if they were interested in footy, and they said they would play if there was a team for them,” Cameron said.

“Some of the girls who registered already played junior footy, and some of them are new to the game. We welcome everyone who’s interested come along and give it a go.”

The four-week training sessions will cover the basics of the game with a series of drills and a game at the end.

Training starts at 4.45pm on Fridays at the Bass Recreation Reserve.

The sessions are free and new participants can sign up online via Play HQ.
