Community fund helps local groups thrive

1 min read

STONY Creek Racing Club (SCRC) continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to supporting the South Gippsland community through its Community Fund Initiative. Introduced in 2024, the Community Fund provides financial assistance to grassroots organisations, schools, and community groups across the region, as part of its ongoing dedication to supporting local organisations making a real difference in the region.

One proud recipient of the Community Fund is the Meeniyan Men’s Shed, a vital hub of connection, craftsmanship, and community spirit. The Men’s Shed provides a welcoming space where locals can share skills, support one another, and contribute to community projects – from repairing furniture and crafting public seating to
mentoring younger generations.

“Support from the Community Fund has made a huge difference to our shed,” Meeniyan Men’s Shed President Tony Kelly said.

“We’ve been able to upgrade our kitchen with new appliances for wider community use, and install a Smart TV that’s great for sharing concept designs and running training sessions. We’ve also enclosed the back area, which means we can now produce more kindling to sell – with all proceeds going straight back into our local community.”

Recently, members of the SCRC Committee visited the Men’s Shed to learn more about their projects and see firsthand the positive impact of the program.

SCRC committee member and Community Fund Chair Sarah Bourke said the initiative reflects the Club’s commitment to deepening community engagement, in line with its Strategic Plan.

“The Community Fund is a meaningful way for us to give back to the region that has supported us for so long,” she said. “The Men’s Shed is an incredible resource for men in our community, and we’re proud to support their programs. We’re grateful for the work they’ve done around our racecourse, including the installation of new seating areas and improvements to the overall presentation of the grounds.”

The Meeniyan Men’s Shed will host its Annual Open Day on Tuesday, November 18, inviting the community to enjoy a BBQ lunch from 11am to 12pm at Recreation Reserve, Hanily Street, Meeniyan, and to see the great work being done.
