Dusty magic carries cast to greater heights

DUSTY Springfield has hit the stage in Wonthaggi, with a class of talent presenting dance and vocals through a stage production that will leave you immersed in the gift of theatre, and the Wonthaggi Theatrical Group will perform until Saturday, June 10.

Dusty – The Original Pop Diva takes you back to the 1950s where big hair, bright colours, and dreams of becoming a glamourous talent is the prime focus in Mary O’Brien’s life – Mary, played by 20-year-old Shontelle O’Connor opens the show with melodious vocals.

Her brother Tom, played by Lucas White who performs in his third show for Wonthaggi Theatrical Group displayed a fine performance along with Wayne Moloney and all of the other leading players.

Mary holds onto a fantasy of becoming a star, but with her family telling her not to dream the impossible Mary feels unseen and their disparaging remarks leave Mary feeling more determined to showcase her talent.

‘Plain’ Mary O’Brien transforms herself into the pop icon ‘Dusty Springfield’ performed by Nina Barry-Macaulay who along with stardom finds herself recognising her self-doubt and a constant strive for perfection.

On her journey with fame, Dusty comes across Reno, played by Kerryn Lockhart and despite the ‘bad press’ finds herself falling in love – a love that in the 1950s was discriminated against.

Reno and Dusty perform as a dynamic duo with harmonious vocals, engaging the audience with iconic tunes including the renowned ‘Wishin & Hopin’.

While Dusty is falling in love, the storyline identifies the illusion behind which young Mary O’Brien still lives.

Jaz Hendry playing Peg and Rafal Pyka playing Rodney immersed themselves in local theatre and together unite in supporting ‘Dusty’ through her journey as a celebrity, bringing humour and wit to the tremendous performance.

The production comprises of a talented ensemble, playing various roles throughout the show bringing high energy and exceptional flair.

Through a journey of discovery, success and unbearable pressure, this show invites you to explore the inner world of the spotlight and the internal strength of self-contemplation.

The cast were supported by their live band and a production team of choreographers, sound and lighting, costume design and hair and make-up – behind the scenes talent that brings a successful show to life.

Wayne Moloney of Wonthaggi Theatrical Group highlighted that, “there is huge responsibility on backstage crew with so many moving set pieces, props, and era wig changes. They nailed it. The cast was inspired by director Linda’s journey this week.

“Seeing Linda prior to curtain was a deeply emotional moment for the cast. The performance was joyous for the entire company as the Dusty magic carried us to greater heights.

“We felt like we were flying. I hope the audience experienced that and tells everyone they know. “Whilst Dusty’s story is a troubled one, the telling of it is one of musical theatres uplifting events.”

Friday, May 26 was opening night of Dusty – The Original Pop Diva at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre and WTG performed to a full audience.

The show will be presented until Saturday, June 10 and tickets are available at www.wtg.org.au
