Trees down, power outages as storm front crosses state

1 min read

POWERCOR is reporting 22,000 power outages in the west of the state as a cold, wintry blast heads our way.

And while there has only been minor disruption to date in the state’s east,  with Ausnet reporting two homes without power in Newhaven and 47 out of power in the Carrajung, Balook and Callignee South area, between the Latrobe Valley and Yarram, it's time to batten down the hatches.

Emergency Services Victoria is reporting multiple trees down across the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island as the storm front approaches.

Locally, we’ve only had a modest amount of rain overnight, with 4ml reported at Pound Creek typical of local falls, but more is expected today, with forecasts of up to 20ml and between 3ml and 7ml in Wonthaggi on Saturday.

What a difference a week makes! Last Saturday a huge crowd of football-netball lovers were basking in early spring sunshine at Wonthaggi for the Gippsland League finals, whereas the temperature will struggle to get to 13 this Saturday.

For those travelling across to Morwell for the big Leongatha versus Wonthaggi game on Saturday, rug up, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting 80% chance of showers, between 1ml to 3ml and a top temperature of 13 degrees as we return to “footy weather” again.

But that’s typical Daffodil Festival weather.
