ONCE again, 20 or more horse drawn carts and wagons, accompanied by riders, will roll along the Great Southern Rail Trail to fundraise for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The four-day, 83km journey will start on the morning of Friday, January 26 at Alberton West Recreation Reserve and stop for lunch at Hedley Hall. Featuring equines from cute little ponies and a mini mule up to magnificent Clydesdales, the drive will be a terrific spectacle.
Overnight stops will be at Welshpool Recreation Reserve, Bennison (private land), and Buffalo (near the hall). The journey will end at the VLE saleyards at Koonwarra. Due to recent storm damage, the rail trail won’t be accessed until Telegraph Road near Christensens Road – so if out driving on quiet roads in the area, please keep slow and wide if passing or overtaking the participants.
The cause is personal for some of our drivers, with some husbands having survived the cancer due to early detection, and another passing away prematurely. So please – get regular prostate checks.
This is a cancer which men can overcome!
“The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is a broad-based community organisation and the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia. They are dedicated to reducing the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men and people with a prostate, their partners and families, recognising the diversity of the Australian Community,” Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse Leanne Prosser noted.
Donations to the PCFA Fundraiser Harness Drive can be given to the participants as they go past, or made online via fundraise.pcfa.org.au/fundraisers/biannualprostatecancercharitydrive/biannual-harness-driving-australia-day-charity-drive
Many thanks to the commercial and individual sponsors, and the community groups that are contributing to the drive in a variety of ways.
The drive is held under the banner of the Australian Carriage Driving Society, with Gippsland based Southern Cross Harness Club and the Eastern Vic Pleasure Harness Club combining to run the event every two years.
