After an extended period with no lights Bass Coast Shire Council has started on a $19,900 lighting upgrade for the Harold Hughes Reserve tennis courts in Corinella.

EVENINGS at the Harold Hughes Reserve in Corinella are about to get a lot brighter.

Bass Coast Shire Council has announced a major upgrade to the reserve’s tennis court lighting and control panel, restoring night-time access to the popular community asset.

The existing court lighting has not been working for some time, restricting the facility's use strictly to daylight hours. This limitation has been particularly challenging for local residents during the shorter winter months.

By replacing the faulty, outdated infrastructure and control equipment, the project aims to significantly improve safety, accessibility, and community sports participation.

Once completed, the upgraded courts will be open for public use well into the evening, providing extended operating hours for sports enthusiasts. The extensive scope of works includes mounting four new energy-efficient LED lights onto the existing light poles.

To ensure ease of use and prevent unnecessary power consumption, a new control panel featuring a simple push-button operation on a one-hour timer will be installed.

The system will also include a timed lockout feature so the lights cannot be activated late into the evening, keeping disturbances to a minimum for surrounding neighbours.

The $19,900 project has been fully funded by Bass Coast Shire Council with construction scheduled to wrap up in two days subject to weather conditions.

Located at 19 Balcombe Street, Corinella the Harold Hughes Reserve has served as a vital community hub since the day it was opened. The facility features a premium acrylic surface tennis court alongside a multi-purpose court equipped with netball and basketball rings, soccer goals, and additional tennis line markings.

Brand new fencing and lighting was installed at the time but according to the Corinella Community Group the pay-to-use night lighting at the Harold Hughes Reserve tennis courts has been non-operational for an extended period without a fix.
