Sydney Thunder has now officially confirmed the signing of Koonwarra-Leongatha RSL product Harry Hoekstra for the upcoming Big Bash League season.

The Thunder made the announcement at 8am on Friday, November 6, and it will give the 20-year-old the chance to work alongside a bowler he grew up watching.

That bowler is Trent Boult, and Hoekstra said the New Zealand left armer, along with Thunder head coach Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, were among the reasons he was keen to join the club.

“I’m really looking forward to working alongside Freddie and Trent Boult as well,” Hoekstra said.

“Freddie seems like a great person and hopefully I can learn a few things off him this season.

“I grew up watching Trent on TV. Being a fellow left armer, he’s done so well on the international and franchise stage for so many years.”

The signing follows a strong start to Hoekstra’s domestic season. He took six wickets on Sheffield Shield debut against South Australia and scored 45 in Victoria’s first innings, then claimed match figures of 9/98 against Tasmania.

Also, in just his second One-Day Cup match, he claimed 5/42 against New South Wales at Junction Oval.

“This year for me has gone so quick and I’m really happy with the way I’m performing,” Hoekstra said.

“I’m sure I can continue performing this season, aiming to bowl well with the new ball, try swing it up front and take a few wickets.”

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said Hoekstra’s ability to take wickets and attack the game stood out to the Thunder staff.

“What he’s been able to achieve in such a short period of time at domestic level has been outstanding,” Copeland said.

“How awesome is it that he can come in to a squad with Trent Boult and Dan Sams, two other incredible left armers to learn from.

“We can’t wait to see him in lime green and hopefully get the opportunity to make his Big Bash debut this summer.”

The Thunder opens its season against the Adelaide Strikers in Canberra just before Christmas on Wednesday, December 16, before facing the Sydney Sixers at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday, December 19.
